AMMONIA MICRO-RESISTOJET Through a AFRL-Kirtland sponsored SBIR, Busek has developed an integrated primary & attitude control propulsion system. It features safe, non-volatile propellant, consumes 1.0 U, less than 15W and under 1.25kg. Busek uses ammonia propellant for several reasons including: (1) relative high specific impulse, (2) ammonia is self pressurizing, (3) ammonia is benign and relatively easy to handle and store, and (4) Busek has experience and a working knowledge base for this propellant. Additional propellants have been proven, including Dupont Suva(R) R-134A and R-236fa refrigerants. Assuming 15W available power, 10 mN thrust is possible for a total delta-V of 60 m/s (assuming a 4 kg spacecraft).
Electrothermal Thrusters Resistojets are the simplest form of electric propulsion. The resistojet increases efficiency of cold gas thrusters by heating the propellant, followed by expansion through a rocket nozzle. The primary benefits of Busek’s ammonia micro-resistojet (MRJ) are higher thrust and efficiency than a typical gas system.
